Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552, as amended, established that records in the possession of Federal agencies are accessible to the public unless they meet one or more of the nine exemptions under FOIA or the Privacy Act of 1974 (as amended), and other authorities.

ONRR is responsible for responding to FOIA requests for records within its purview. If you are interested in records held by another agency, you should contact that agency.

Request Procedure

  • Review 43 CFR Part 2 Subpart B, which describes components necessary to file a FOIA request.
  • Assemble details about the time, place, persons, events, subjects, or other information regarding the records you seek. Use the FOIA Request Form as a template of what to include in your request.
  • File your FOIA request, using one of the following methods:
